FAQ: Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity (ACCB)

General Information and Mission

  • What is the ACCB? The ACCB (Angkor Centre for Conservation of Biodiversity) is a leading non-governmental, non-profit organization dedicated to the conservation, rescue, and breeding of highly threatened wildlife in Cambodia. It serves as a crucial institution for biodiversity preservation in Southeast Asia.
  • Where is the ACCB located? The center is situated near the renowned Angkor temple complex in the Banteay Srei district of Cambodia.
  • What are the three main pillars of the ACCB's work? Our mission is built on three core activities: Conservation (managing, breeding and reintroduction programs), Animal Welfare (providing rescue, rehabilitation, and care for confiscated animals), and Education (raising awareness among local communities and authorities).
  • What is the primary goal of the ACCB? The primary goal is to prevent the extinction of native wildlife, combat the illegal wildlife trade, and protect the unique ecosystems of Cambodia.

Animals and Conservation Programs

  • Which animal species are the focus of the ACCB? The ACCB focuses heavily on critically endangered reptiles and birds, including priority species such as the Giant Ibis (Thaumatibis gigantea), the White-shouldered Ibis (Pseudibis davisoni), and various highly threatened turtle species (e.g., the Batagur species). We also care for mammals and other animals rescued from trafficking.
  • What is an assurance population? An assurance population is a group of animals held in captivity (ex-situ) whose purpose is to safeguard genetic diversity. This population is crucial for future reintroduction programs aimed at boosting declining wild populations.
  • How does the ACCB contribute to in-situ conservation? Beyond breeding, our work involves releasing animals into protected areas, conducting habitat monitoring, and collaborating with rangers and local partners to combat poaching and habitat destruction directly in the wild.

Visiting and Support

  • Can visitors tour the ACCB? Yes, but access is strictly controlled. The ACCB is a conservation facility, not a standard zoo. Visits are generally restricted to guided tours offered on specific days and times. Visitors must arrive punctually for the tour start time.
  • How can I support the ACCB's work? You can support us through donations, which are vital for covering operating costs, purchasing medical supplies, providing specialized animal feed, and funding our rescue and education efforts.
  • Is an Angkor Pass required to visit the ACCB? No, an Angkor Pass is not required to access the center.
