Focus on birds
Among the endangered species kept are the Giant Ibis (Pseudibis gigantea, P. davisoni) and Bengal Bustard (Houbaropsis bengalensis), as well as the Sunda Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos javanicus, vulnerable, VU), the Asian Woolly Stork (Ciconia episcopus, near threatened, NT), and the Green Peafowl (Pavomuticus, endangered, EN). The latter two are already being bred regularly and successfully, and the offspring are being reintroduced to protected areas.
The ACCB also maintains several breeding pairs of the Argala Marabou Stork (Leptoptilos dubius, EN). This once very common bird has become increasingly rare due to habitat loss and is on the verge of extinction. It now breeds only in Assam, India, and Cambodia.
For the first time, an Argala pair incubated eggs in 2023. However, the rearing of the young animals by the parents failed and hand-rearing was abandoned.
